Steirereck Restaurant is housed in a beautiful Art Deco building in Vienna's central city park, The setting is beautiful and the Restaurant is a grand affair with a 35,000-strong wine list and stunning views over the river Wien. The location is indeed one of the most beautiful parts of Vienna, close to the famous Johann Strauss statue. Drawing on produce from local farmers and the products from his own farm, Heinz Reitbauer creates the very finest of contemporary Austrian cuisine in an Art Nouveau setting. 

The Restaurant's dishes and their origins are explained in detail on small cards: a lovely memento of a unique culinary experience. In the hotel basement the “Meierei” milk bar proposes 120 cheese varieties from 13 different countries and typical Austrian pastries. From breakfast to dinner all the Austrian flavours in a relaxed atmosphere.

Yet the food has stayed true to its old-world heritage with Chef Heinz Reitbauer using national and regional Austrian cooking to create small moments of surprise through the discovery of previously unknown ingredients or the resurrection of those long forgotten.

Heinz Reitbaeur presides over what is now accepted as Vienna’s best restaurant, Steirereck, which serves modern Austrian food in one of the most stunning setting and that makes the experience essential for anyone visiting Viena. Steirereck can boast some mind-boggling statistics; there are 35,000 wines on its wine list, it has its own ‘Meieri’ Milk Bar with 120 cheese varieties from over 13 countries, and chef Heinz Reitbaeur even owns his own farm from which he sources much of Steirereck’s ingredients.

Steirereck was opened in 1970 on the corner of two streets: Weissgerber Lände and Rasumofskygasse in Vienna. Because of the location and the fact that my parents came from Styria they named the restaurant, “Steirereck”, which translates as “Styrian corner”
